Gloves
How it should be...
There are rules for gloves, which we mention on this page, but Poirier is also all about brides who choose their own way completely. When can you wear gloves? The answer is: always! A bride may wear all lengths of gloves, so choose what you think looks best with your wedding dress. During a wedding, a bride may keep her gloves on, even when shaking hands and while eating. When gloves are taken off during dinner, they should be placed under the napkin on your lap. Gloves should not be held like a wilted bouquet of flowers, but rather by their fingers. Gloves may be combined with jewellery, here the rule is: rings under the gloves, bracelets over the gloves, unless they are gloves with jewellery or jewels incorporated in them.
Material and length

At Poirier, we offer gloves made of different materials, lengths, with or without fingers and richly decorated or elegant by simplicity. Of course, your gloves should be the perfect match with your bridal outfit.

Gloves, a stylish history

Wearing gloves goes way back, even as far as Ancient Egypt. Today, gloves are still celebrated fashion items during weddings, but what is the history of these iconic bridal accessories?

• Ancient Egypt and Rome - In these time periods, gloves were mainly worn as status symbols. Often gloves were made of fine linen or leather and were worn by the upper classes in society as an expression of power and prestige. Those who had to protect their hands with gloves for sure were important people.
• Middle Ages - Brides regularly wore gloves in the Middle Ages, as these bridal accessories represented purity, as well as loyalty and fidelity. Gloves were often gifts that were presented to a bride.
• Renaissance - Gloves were the fashion accessory of choice at this time. Brides often wore gloves made of fine fabrics and they were decorated with expensive lace and delicate embroidery.
• The 18th century - In some higher circles in the 18th century it was an obligation to wear gloves during the wedding ceremony.
• The Baroque - For brides the Baroque tradition was to wear long elegant gloves that symbolised sophistication, class and high status.

• The Belle Époque - The 19th century made gloves an essential part of bridal wear, as they stood for purity, but also femininity. White and cream gloves were the accessories that completed a wedding dress.

• Today - In the present day, bridal gloves have become beautiful accessories. Nowadays, brides choose special gloves to match their wedding dress. From an accessory that stood for virtues such as cleanliness and loyalty, gloves have become true fashion items that no bride can ignore anymore, and what has never disappeared is that gloves stand for class and elegance, a combination that never goes out of style.
Ring pillows
From Cleopatra to the Kardashians

Ring pillows have been used for centuries to present rings on during wedding ceremonies, but did you know that ring pillows were already used in Ancient Egypt? You can read more about the history of ring pillows below.

• In ancient times - To emphasise the value of jewels, such as rings, these were placed on pillows in Ancient Egypt, this was also done to show that the jewellery belonged to someone with prestige and had great value.
• Middle Ages - In this period, rings were also presented on special cushions. Jewellery was worn by monarchs, nobility and knights in the Middle Ages as a symbol of power, loyalty and honour.
• Renaissance - During this time period, weddings became increasingly symbolic and had lots of rituals to make a marriage official. Rings were often presented on a special ring cushion during marital ceremonies.

• Victorian era - Marriages in the Victorian era had a lot of ceremonial display, like the use of a ring cushion, and were therefore very elaborate.

• In the now - Nowadays, we increasingly use a ring cushion to present the wedding rings on, often it is worn by bridesmaids during the ceremony; there are also couples who choose to have their four-legged friends bring the rings with a ring cushion around their neck or on their back. A modern ring pillow can shine because of simplicity, but it can also be richly decorated, it can be made of different fabrics, and can also have different embellishments. In short, ring pillows have never left the bridal scene and are very now!

garters
The history of the garter

From the Middle Ages (approx. 400-1500 AD) until the mid-20th century, a garter was often used in wedding rituals. It was traditional during this period for the groom to take off the garter from the bride and give it to his friends as a good luck charm. This ritual symbolised the beginning of the wedding night, as well as the marriage itself. In addition, a garter was seen as a symbol of virginity and fertility. The removal of the garter by the groom is traditionally a rite of passage in which the bride goes from virgin to wife.

Nowadays, garters are unmissable items for brides, for example…
• The garter toss
During the reception or wedding party, a groom playfully takes off a bride's garter with his hands or, in the case of a daring groom, with his teeth. The garter is then shot towards the unmarried male guests, this is also known as the ‘garter toss’. According to tradition, the one who catches the garter is the next to be married. This ritual is similar to brides throwing their wedding bouquet over their shoulder towards the unmarried ladies of a wedding.
• Something
The English tradition says ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’; this phrase is part of a rhyme from the Victorian era. This tradition is meant to give a bride some extra luck during her wedding by wearing four different items with a distinct meaning. The originally blue ribbons on a garter represent ‘something blue’.
• Remembrance
There are a lot of brides who keep their garter as a fond memory of their wedding. Some garters even go from generation to generation and become part of family tradition.
At Poirier, we offer different types of garters:

♥ Lace with Swarovski stones - Do you like a romantic or trendy bridal look? Then choose a garter made of fine lace or silk, which also has a beautiful embellishment of Swarovski stones.
♥ Floral garters - There are also garters decorated with fabric flowers to create a beautiful, natural look.
♥ Garter with matching ring cushion - At Poirier, we have sets featuring a garter with a matching ring cushion. Both are unmissable items during a wedding ceremony.
♥ Traditional garter - Of course, we also offer a traditional lace garter.
